Chapter 566 566: The Wise Do Not Fall in Love

Chapter 566 566: The Wise Do Not Fall in Love

It was Saturday, and there were no classes. Although the Goblet of Fire placed in the Entrance Hall was on everyone's mind, no one was going to stay in the Hall or the Great Hall all day.

After breakfast, everyone dispersed. Wade took a book and went to the Umbrella Room to pass the time.

Not long after he arrived, Theo and Ryan showed up with their homework. Then came Padma, who brought a pile of snacks. Within half an hour, the others began trickling in as well.

Michael was the last to enter, looking thoroughly annoyed. He slammed the door shut with a loud bang, startling everyone.

Padma raised an eyebrow and said loudly, "Hey, no one here offended you."

"Sorry," Michael muttered, ruffling his hair as he slumped into his seat. He randomly pulled out a book, flipped it open, then tossed it aside in frustration.

"What's wrong?" Wade asked. "Did you have a fight with someone?"

Michael looked like he didn't want to talk. "Nothing," he mumbled.

But Padma gave him a knowing look. "It's Daphne, isn't it?"

"Daphne?" several people repeated in unison with surprised expressions on their faces.

"Michael… your new girlfriend is Daphne from Slytherin?" Hermione asked bluntly.

"Yeah. Is that so weird?" Michael said. "She's really pretty, and her personality isn't as bad as Pansy's. Maybe you guys haven't noticed, but she's never actually bullied anyone herself."

"But when Pansy bullies people, she never steps in to stop her, does she?" Hermione pointed out sharply. "She's an accomplice."

Michael looked away and retorted stubbornly, "What accomplice…? If she didn't go along with them, she'd have a hard time in her own House. There's nothing she could do."

"But how did you end up with her…" Harry asked, clearly puzzled. "I mean, I don't have anything against Daphne personally, but I thought you didn't like Slytherins."

"More accurately, I don't like the ones who preach pure-blood supremacy. I actually get along well with a few Slytherins, like Astoria."

Michael corrected them, then added, "But really, it was because I saw Daphne standing up to Pansy to protect her sister. Later, I even saw her hiding near the greenhouse, crying. That's when I realized… She's different."

He glanced nervously at Padma, and the latter half of his sentence came out quieter.

Padma, however, remained expressionless—like it was none of her business—and asked, "So why are you two fighting today?"

At that, Michael's expression turned sour again.

"Daphne… She wanted me to go with her to the Maze today. But I said I'd already planned to spend the day at the Umbrella room finishing my essays. As soon as I said that, for some reason, she started crying and said if I didn't care about her, we might as well just break up…"

"And then?" Wade asked, surprised. "She said all that and you still came here?"

Michael wasn't some clueless guy—he was actually quite good at cheering girls up. Normally, he'd say a few sweet words, and the situation would be fine. It was strange to see him storming off to the Umbrella Room instead.

"Ugh… I'm just frustrated…" Michael said, laying his head on the table, clearly down.

"Daphne is really sweet, but if I date her, I have to give up the lifestyle I'm used to. I'd have to compromise on everything just to suit her preferences, and I just don't think I can do that."

Padma snorted coldly. "You idiot."

"What?" Michael looked at her, confused. "You think my reasoning is wrong?"

"Don't you get it?" Padma said, speaking in a tone of intellectual superiority as she lowered her gaze to look at Michael.

"She didn't really want to go to the Maze. And it's not like she minded you coming to the Umbrella Room either—she just thought the reason you insisted on coming here was because..."

She bit her lip, and her cheeks flushed slightly. "...To see me."

Padma was one of the most beautiful girls in their year. When her cheeks turned that faint pink, it was like a sunset hidden beneath the frozen surface of a lake—stunning beyond words.

Michael suddenly froze and his expression became dazed for a moment before he finally processed what she had just said. He blinked slowly and let out a quiet "Ah."

Two seconds later, he stammered, "So that's... wh-what it was…"

He began flipping through a book, pages rustling loudly, then tossed it down again. He shifted uncomfortably in his chair as if it had turned into a porcupine—until finally, he stood up abruptly.

"I… I'd better go explain things to her…"

He wasn't sure who he was saying that to, but he pulled back his chair and dashed out of the Umbrella Room.

Everyone else in the room, Wade included, fell silent, overwhelmed by the tension between the two.

When the door finally closed behind Michael with a thud, everyone instinctively looked at Padma.

But Padma didn't seem to notice anything. She pushed her homework toward Hermione and asked:

"Hermione, have you written the essay on the Muggle-Repelling Charm? I was thinking maybe the incantations could be paired like this…"

The heavy atmosphere in the room began to ease, and everyone finally remembered how to breathe.

Theo leaned toward Wade and whispered, "Did you see the way Michael looked at her just now? I think he still likes Padma."

"It's just lust," Wade replied coldly. "Padma's just too nice. If not, Michael's kind of behavior would've earned him a chopping block by now."

Theo blinked. "What does that mean?"

"The wise do not fall in love," Wade said seriously. "Love is a poison that lowers your intelligence. Its power to control the mind is worse than the Imperius Curse."

Theo was speechless for a moment before stammering, "Th-that's a bit extreme…"

After lunch, it started to drizzle. The air was filled with the fresh scent of damp soil, making it feel especially refreshing.

Through the window, they could see many foreign students eagerly lining up outside the Maze. Not even the rain could dampen their enthusiasm.

"Why hasn't the school sealed off the Maze?" Padma muttered. "It's supposed to be our Hogwarts training resource..."

As if realizing that sounded petty, she added, "And what if those guys cause damage in there?"

Ryan asked, "Has anyone here decided to participate in the tournament? Did any of you sign up?"

Everyone looked at one another. Ryan spoke first: "Theo and I didn't plan to. Our House is convinced Cedric will be the one chosen anyway."

"I didn't sign up either," Padma shrugged. "You expect me to compete in a possibly deadly tournament? No thanks."

"Same," Hermione said cautiously. "I don't think I know enough yet, and I'm unlikely to be chosen. So signing up doesn't make much sense."

"That's how I feel too," Neville said with a simple smile.

That left only Wade and Harry. The two exchanged a glance.

"So it looks like it's just the two of us who entered?" Wade said.
