Chapter 289: An Unreasonable Request

Chapter 289: An Unreasonable Request

The twilight sky of the Dusk City was filled with beautiful, colorful clouds. Other people might have gotten used to it, but Aegon still considered it one of the most beautiful sights he had seen in his life.

Currently, the clouds in the distance were dancing wildly as if something huge was moving underneath them. The movement grew closer and closer until the clouds finally split apart.

Down from the heavens descended a majestic creature, the ruler of the skies. A red dragon with a long, narrow neck, wide wings that unsettled the atmosphere every time they moved. Deep red scales covered its entire body like pieces of armor.

At its head, the dragon hosted two curved horns that were like a crown. However, unlike the other dragons Aegon was familiar with like Vhagar, this one was smaller and didn’t assert its dominance.

It didn’t need to, as its sheer presence affected the world around it.

"This..." Elara was shocked, clearly not expecting it.

Aegon was happy to see her reaction and smiled. He held her hand and said, "She’s beautiful, isn’t she?"

Elara had no words. After all, beautiful wasn’t a word one associated with these ferocious creatures normally.

The dragon circled around the mansion a few times, as if assessing the area before finally making a landing in the backyard. The landing shook the earth as her massive claws left imprints on the ground.

Aegon wondered if the Dawn City people were thinking of shifting elsewhere. Too many things had happened recently, after all, and they had also seen the appearance of dragons here.

’Doubt it though.’

From the dragon’s back, a young woman jumped out, wearing loose clothes and having messy hair. She smiled at them, then went on her knees. "I’m in your service, Young Master."

"We’re alone, Big Sis," Aegon facepalmed and said. "Stand up."

Nora stood up, nodding at Elara, who finally composed herself before an outsider. Then, she turned towards Aegon and said, "I was quite surprised by your sudden request, Young Master. It came out of nowhere."

"About that, sorry. I should have told you earlier," Aegon scratched his cheek and said. "It’s just that I thought of it a bit late and had to ask you on short notice."

"It’s no problem," Nora waved her hand before her face and asked, "But you could have asked Father. Why me?"

"Because Vhagar would kill us, you know," Aegon sighed. "The big guy is still pissed at me. Not to mention he is way too big. I’m not going to conquer some kingdom, you know."

"Surely he won’t do that with Father around..." Nora paused, as she finally understood everything. "Wait! You don’t mean it, right?"

Aegon smiled sweetly at her. "Of course, I mean it."

"Young Master, I can’t let you do that. It’s too dangerous!" Nora panicked. "You haven’t even completed your trial yet. Father would kill me. No, the whole Valeria House would brand me a heretic or something."

"Shh! Nothing of that sort is going to happen," Aegon grabbed her shoulders and spoke softly. "Think about it, why did I ask for Virginia of all dragons?"

Nora stayed silent.

"She’s gentle, understands me, and doesn’t resort to violence unless needed," Aegon said, trying to convince her. "I can communicate with her. Trust me, Big Sis."

Nora was still conflicted, even though she understood he was right. It was simply too risky, and she was worried about him. She liked him as her little brother, but he was also their last hope.

If something happened to him, she might as well die alongside him.

"Aegon, are we really going to ride her?" Elara asked in disbelief. "Are you crazy?"

"I probably am," Aegon shrugged. "Think about it. I’m a Valerian and bound to have a dragon partner. One day, I’ll ride it for sure. But you won’t be there when I first ride it."

He looked into her eyes gently and said, "I want to share my first experience with you, El. This is also your first time, same as me. And it’s very important to me."

Elara shook from inside. The look in his eyes almost melted her heart, and then his words hit the mark. Happiness surged within her, knowing fully well what riding a dragon meant for a Valerian. And here he was, wanting to share the first experience with her.

She never thought she could fall for him harder, but he proved otherwise.

Beside them, Nora witnessed their exchange and clicked her tongue. "Curse you two. Did you plan to do this from the start? Because it’s working."

"Not really," Aegon replied. "But I’m glad it worked. So, what’s your decision?"

Nora remained silent for a while before saying, "Let me talk with her, then you talk with her. If we’re good, then I’ll take the risk."

"Thanks a lot, sis!" Aegon beamed in joy. "I’ll forever be grateful for this and will make up for causing you so much trouble."

"She’s going to be our House’s Mistress," Nora said, smiling at Elara. "She deserves this."

"Thank you, Sister Nora," Elara bowed respectfully.

"You’re an Elf royalty and my future mistress. Don’t bow like that," Nora chuckled and said. "Let me have a talk with her. She can get quite possessive."

After that, Nora went back to her dragon Virginia and began to talk with her. Though, they didn’t hear anything as the conversation didn’t happen physically.

"I’ve read that Dragon Riders communicate with dragons and other beasts in the spiritual plane," Elara asked. "Is that true?"

"Yes," Aegon nodded and explained. "If the theory is to be believed, then every soul originates from the main consciousness. As in, we’re basically a part of the world’s consciousness. From a philosophical angle, it’s basically the world expressing itself and observing itself through us, who are also a part of it."

"Sounds a bit complicated," Elara frowned and said. "So, you mean you and I are the same person?"

"Not quite. We originate from the same source, but are different persons. That’s why no two people are the same. The world wants to experience itself in different ways, so it creates different personas."

Aegon shrugged. "At least that’s what the philosophers say."
